Frequently Asked Questions

For your convenience Eileen has listed below the most frequently asked questions and answers she receives regarding Bowen Therapy. Should you happen to have a question which is not listed feel free to contact Eileen.

Q: What is The Bowen Technique?

A: The Bowen Technique is a holistic, hands on, remedial therapy that is applied using gentle pressure. It is used to successfully treat a multitude of common health and wellbeing problems. No force is used and there is no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue. It was developed in the 1970’s by Australian Tom Bowen and has been practised in the United Kingdom since 1993. If the natural balance of the body or mind is disrupted by disease, injury or stresses placed upon it, then Bowen Therapy could be the ideal solution.

Q: How Does The Bowen Technique Work?

A: Bowen Therapy promotes self-healing, pain relief and recovery of energy using light touch. Bowen pressure is used in a different way to other forms of hands on therapy like massage and is only applied on precise areas of the body. Bowen Therapy consists of a series of unique rolling moves over muscle and connective tissue. By combining these moves the therapist is able to address the body as a whole, or by targeting a specific area. Bowen “moves” are very small movements of tissue which brings about profound change. They are gentle, precise and safe to use on people of all ages, including children and new-born babies. Simply put, Bowen Therapy enables the body to reset and heal itself.

Q: What Conditions Can Bowen Therapy Treat?

A: As a remedial therapy that promotes self-healing Bowen Therapy can potentially treat numerous conditions, these include:

  • Back Bain
  • Neck Pain
  • Frozen Shoulder

Q: Is Bowen Therapy Safe?

A: Yes. There are no violent cracks, crunches or twists.

Q: Who Can Receive Bowen Therapy?

A: Bowen Therapy is suitable for people of all ages, from new-born babies to the very elderly. However, a parent or guardian must be present when treating clients under 18 years of age.

Q: Is Bowen Therapy Safe During Pregnancy?

A: Yes, most Bowen procedures can be carried out safely during pregnancy. Bowen Therapy can provide effective relief from symptoms including morning sickness, breathlessness and lower back pain.

Q: What Should I Expect During Bowen Therapy Treatment?

A: The first consultation begins with a postural assessment and your medical history is taken. After assessing joint and movement function and addressing any weaknesses, the client is asked to lie on a treatment couch, unless unable to do so, in which case treatment is received while seated in a chair. The therapist then uses thumbs and fingers at precise points on the body to make rolling type moves which stimulate muscles and soft tissue. During the treatment the therapist may leave the room for short periods. This enables the client to rest while the body responds to the moves already performed and makes subtle adjustments to initiate the healing process. Treatments are very relaxing and usually last between 45 and 60 minutes.

Q: How Many Treatments Will I Require?

A: This depends on what conditions you are experiencing, how chronic the condition is, your general well-being and how you respond to treatment. You will initially be asked to book in for two sessions, one week apart. After your two sessions are completed Eileen can then assess whether or not you need further treatment.

Q: How Much Do Treatments Cost?

A: £50
